Subject: Skills Breakout

I remember seeing an article somewhere that broke all the skills The article was arguing that the DQ skills should not continue to exist as a group of "sub-skills" that each advanced as the character advanced. I have looked at all the files here and cannot find it, I did find other skills that could be added to the present skill list. I am not looking to add "Archer" or whatever I am looking to have a list of smaller skills, each with their own cost to advance and success percentage like weapons presently have, and get away from the "Healer", "Thief", "Ranger" skill types. Can anyone help me.

I vaguely remember something along that line but I can recall where (or even when) it was that I saw this.  There is some merit to the idea.  After all weapons and spells are all individually ranked in DQ and it has always been a little weird that an ability taken by a Troubadour at R10 is performed at the same proficiency as one taken 10 ranks earlier.

What's the scope of the expansion you are thinking about?

Are you thinking about adding content within the existing area of FoA or extending the map to cover new areas?  (I assume you have seen the Seagate Guild material that expanded FoA quite a ways.)

Have you seen Rodger Thorm's Wilderness of Ordurak module which is about 20% the size of FoA?  I'm hoping that it will get released here sometime soon.  In theory it is north of FoA and it would be nice to have it actually connected up.

Eventually expanding to a continent, maybe even the whole world at 5 miles hexes per hex (for land.)  I use ADC2, but I can transport it to pdf.  I've got a coarse (125 miles per hex at the equator) map of a world, but that's based on my campaign world.  And scaling down to 5 miles per hex and breaking the terrain up to realistic is a personal challenge to me.

I was thinking of extending the map.  I have seen the Seagate Guild material, but nothing on the scale of FoA (5 miles to the hex).  I did just find the Shorkyne, though it isn't the scale of FoA.

No, I haven't seen Ordurak module.

So a pretty big project.  To do it well would require someone to drive the project and provide the overarching vision for it.  That's definitely not me.  If you looked my FoA map you've seen the limits of my artistic abilities and in the 30 some odd years I've used FoA as a campaign setting I've never gotten around to mapping out a single town and the majority of the NPCs in towns are just names.  I've never even decided on whether or not the Baron of Carzala has any family and, if so, how many.  lol

Still I would be happy to contribute in some way as long as someone was providing an overall framework to guide contributions and provide direction.

Aide de Camp is not something I have ever worked with and I'm not sure I would want to pay for and then learn a new mapping tool.  I already have FM8 as well CC3 and I end up using Gimp 99% of the time because it's easier and faster.

I'm definitely up for some brainstorming on how it might get put together.

I also have CC3, but because I'm familiar with ADC2 I'm more comfortable with it.  ADC2 is available for viewing for free, and I'm willing to work with the map with input from others, even though that would be the burden on me.  I have my background for several countries and NPCs, plus details on several cities.  I also have Roleplaying City Map Generator 5.40.

With contributions from others, other countries, cultures and cities would help users expand their worlds.

FoA is a little section of my campaign world, and on another continent of where my current adventuring group is.

I remembered a word test a friend sent me I was determined that I had 20,000+ words, a college, well read person, would place me at Rk 7 (she's a English major with 25,000+ words.)

My conclusion is that Rk 6 is what most people in DQ worlds Native language has only 'regional' fluency, any other languages would have an accent until they get to Rk 8.

I've never given Rank 8 Speak to the average person.  Rank 6 seems about right and I would even go down to R4 for the residents of remote or isolated populations.

I don't go much above R4 in Write for any NPC where writing isn't part of how they make a living.

I've had a hazy memory that's been driving me crazy and I'm hoping you wise grognards will be able to help me out.  I vaguely remember reading an article about magical artifacts for DQ, but I cannot for the life of me remember the magazine or find the article.  I'm 99% it was NOT the "Enhancing the Enchanter" article from Dragon magazine, which I've looked at, but I also can't find another reference to magic items that's more like what I was remembering.

Also, I have the Dragon Magazine Archive on CD and have searched that for this article, but not found anything, which leads me to believe it was in some other publication like White Dwarf or something similar from the good old days.

Anyone else remember anything like this?  These would have been fairly epic artifacts, probably drawn from Earth legends.

Thanks!

Two considerations which come to my mind are "turn rate" and "momentum" - both dependent if the flier has a great amount of mass or restriction.  Possibly, a generic method may be derived which takes that into consideration as well as what movement limitations there may be from the environment .. like being underwater, or upon a mountain top where a high wind blows in a particular direction.. or if the current of the medium being traversed changes direction in some way, or somewhat randomly?

One thing I like is when/if someone comes up with something that is simple but is effective in being able to emulate an otherwise complex thing.   The 2nd ed TMR that replaced the 1st Edition APA was a sorely needed thing at the time it came out.

If something could be developed which does not make GMing too "rules heavy," I would be happy to see it and implement it.

Subject: Anyone got any scenarios to upload here?

Anyone here who is old enough to remember, may recall that we were limited on space for uploading such things as the game rules + scenarios, + etc.

Now, the amount of data that is here is but a sliver of the memory bar graph!  I know that in the Universe group, we had to open up few secondary groups to be able to have more space (er, no pun altogether intended!).

I'm wanting to upload in here, at some point (perhaps, before the close of this year?) a scenario which I would be running at, say, a Strategicon.  It'll be in the Middle Earth setting - not long after "The Return of the King."  And will concern an undertaking (uh, not a pun there either!) of a consortium of folk with a number of economic concerns.. Hobbits operating an orchard, Dwarves doing - what else - along a locale which I'll call, "Hillsdale." Altogether invented by me, so not "cannon." As I am pondering it at this moment, I may create it as a campaign setting so that however many adventures may be gotten out of it.  If so, I'll make it adaptable so that it may be run in "any setting." I'm not certain where though, for example, it may be set into an Alusia map? Possibly upon one of the extended maps I might see a "fit?"

Anyhow, just a few thoughts and I wonder that perhaps this may inspire others to do something too, or maybe upload something already put together?

Game On, Everyone!

Steve Jackson wrote this manuscript but it was never published. Does anyone have a copy? More info: http://www.sjgames.com/ill/archive/January_30_2019/DragonQuest_Worldbuilding

I have been GM'ing DQ since 1984 in my own world I created, since worldbuilding was the most ambitious task a GM could do in the early 1980's, which includes the Frontiers of Alusia. I and other experienced DQ GMs have been asking Steve jackson for years regarding information of SPI's DQ Worldbuilding Supplement that Steve stated he finished. I do not have a copy, although Steve said he included the material he designed in GURPS, which was published after SPI lost their property to T$R. I am not surprised that Eric Goldberg is still unofficially involved in supporting DQ, since Chris Klug is as well. If you find a copy of this "lost manuscript"
of DQ I would be ecstatic to read it.

I do not know if my comment contributed to Steve's decision to release this much desired supplement for DQ, partial that it is. If so I am glad. It is a treasure to GM's who have been running DQ, and still do, for many years. Several of us knew it was partially written, but had no access to it - until now.

Thank you Steve Jackson and Eric Goldberg

Perhaps this will give some of the old timers a jar if they ever had access to the missing sections.  One can hope.

I would not consider myself an "Old Timer", considering I started the rpg hobby as a player in 1978 and began GM'ing  in 1980, and still do so. Of course, that is relativism - is it not. But alas, I only have part of Steve Jackson's draft of DQ World Generation, none of which are the missing sections.

By the way, are there any DQ players in the Youngstown Ohio area? I am preparing another DQ campaign, in my own World of Coranthir that I have been GM'ing since 1984, and seeking additional players.

There are more gamers involved with DQ in Ohio, since the BBS on ftp before the yahoo groups, than people realize. Other than myself, there is/was Phillip Proefrock, Dave Nadler, Drake Stanton, Cody Mills and Frank Paldino. Anyone else would like to say who you are and where you located. After all, that is one of the purposes of this DQ community from 1994 in the DQ Newsletter to these two yahoo groups now.

Cody Mills: I'm a also in Ohio. Cincinnati

Frank Paldino: I am in Youngstown, Ohio

Jeffrey McGonagill: Oregon
