Always a good idea, mate. :)

Nope, have gone through several computers since that website
existed, and haven't got a copy of the material at all, other than a
couple of logos for it. Is it not available at the Archive place on the
web?

I still have my original copy of this (though it was a copy of a

Welcome back John.

I have appreciated all that you have contributed everything.

I've only played on DQ since it came out.  My campaign Lieah I'm still playing in f2f, though only about every two weeks, real life gets in the way.  I have one player I've known since within the first year and he is playing with me again, and while he also plays D&D, he prefers DQ.

My Yahoo group has been quiet for years, because there were problems emailing with Yahoo.

There if enough interest, I would be willing to run an email game.

Hullo, folks,

I was just wondering... Does anyone have PDF copies of the DQ
Character Sheet, Adventure Sheet, and NPC Record Sheet for the game?
(From one of the 2nd Edition versions of the game. Preferably not the
3rd Edition stuff.)

If so, please e-mail me the PDFs at my e-mail address

Thanks. :)

Indeed. Real Life(tm) is one of those things that we gamers deal
with in our gaming habits and way of life. Players come, players go,

I know the feeling. :) One of the players in my Friday night
game has been with me since 1981, and she's the only player with
experience with DQ. She actually was playing the daughter of her
original character when I stopped running the game back in
2000-whatever. Her daughter will be playing with us in this campaign,

In what way? Yahoogroups doesn't seem to be all that unreliable,
and I've run a few games on the mailing lists there (other systems)

While I don't mind the electronic sheet that you have up on your
site, Snaf, I was looking more for a PDF of the sheets from one of the
2nd Edition books. And when I went to the DQ-RULES files, I couldn't
find a character sheet there at all.

Thanks for the offers, and the links. :)

This link should take you to the open PbP games available. The site admin is Steve who is a great fellow and I don't think would mind there being another game opened up.

I'm with you...I prefer face to face but DQ isn't played in this area, in fact I haven't played it since the 80's

Hi John,
I have a friend, at the moment on a gaming break, Friday nights is too much after a week of work.  Her most recent character is the grand-daughter of her original character from 1987.

She and my wife were playing sometimes write several times a day and Yahoo would get delay some posts late, making confusing of what is happening.

I'm up for via Yahoo, Pbem, or I can invite people to a Storium story (it will allow them to play that only story free).  I would like at least two want to play.

Just an FYI, I uploaded a quick scan of my 2nd Ed (Bantam) Character Sheet and Adventure Record Sheet and the NPC Record Sheet from the Judges Guild Heroes and Villians into the Character Sheets folder of the Files area.

The NPC Record Sheet is similar to the one that appeared in Ares #11 DragonNotes (p.29-30). A transcribed version of this article can be found in the root folder of the Files area.

I uploaded a PDF of the blank NPC cards that were included in the DQ adventure pack, "Enchanted Wood", to the files area.  I also uploaded a text file I created explaining what the abbreviations on the NPC cards mean.

SPI granted permission to copy the NPC cards for personal use (see the PDF file).

I was wondering if folks can help me out with something...

I remember there was a really good DQ adventure written by Tom

anyone have a PDF of the adventure they'd be willing to shoot my way? I
seem to have lost that in my computer collapse of a couple of years ago.

Thanks, in advance. :)

GM's Screen (SPI) 1980
4 panel 8-1/2" x 11" folded screen; SPI #331P11 (1st Ed.)
For 1st Edition. It has the same picture on it as the 2nd Edition. It is four panels printed front and back (only 6 sides have game material on them).

SPI #3310 (2nd Ed.)
Has the words 2nd Edition Compatible on the front cover. Basically the same information with some minor adjustments to weapon Base Chances, and some items deleted.

I have uploaded a copy to the Files area in the Archive folder for comparison.

The 1999 version of Water Works is available in the Adventures folder of the files area (although the re-done version looks much spiffier).

Well, good to know that Rodger is still alive and kicking
(somewhere), and that there was an update on the product. I just really
hope that this goes ahead, and that it becomes available to those of us

I have the earlier, 1999 version of "The Water Works". I just
want to get ahold of the spiffier looking re-done one.

Hopefully, there will be some word on this stuff, soon...

One thing else that come to my mind - and has been "out there" for perhaps 20+ years..

The idea of a setting in which a more "primitive" society might not quite have a institution of learning either available or extant-

thus, perhaps something like a "slow learning" adept who gradually acquires the various spells or rituals before becoming a "full fledged" caster?

Or, for that matter, perhaps one who might only deign to acquire some learning, but not all?

And, another idea, of a "meta mage" who might "pick and choose" from various selections - maybe (only?) from within a branch perhaps?

Just another idea I have "wondered at."

I am considering an option to make damage (taken) to be a scaled sort of thing.  Perhaps, something along the lines of the old Star Fleet Battles where some of the shield hits become internal hits (the main example of the concept which comes to my mind)..

But, in short, perhaps something like a percent roll or just a chart so that when one does take, say, 20 points of damage that a percentage or fraction of the total goes towards EN rather than being "truncated" by only being against FT.. which is a "sore" thing, but I am thinking of that from a "realism" point of view.

Might be a terrible unbalancing thing, but, at this point, it is just something "in the back of my mind" (I am too distracted at this point to put something together- aka "homeless" haha ) but, just figured I would run the idea past folks and perhaps someone might have already considered this concept?

Thanks..

In my opinion, the effect you are looking for is already covered by Endurance hits. Big 20 point hits still wipe a target's fatigue out after a shot or two. The Endurance hits and possible critical hits already make every combat have that percentile chance of death. A truly fortunate halfling with a bow can shoot a dragon in the eye and then have bragging rights for multiple life times. Just my thoughts.

Subject: Re: (Magical) "Colleges?"
I would say that each game master should tailor the specifics of his DragonQuest world to fit the story he wants to create. If you want to make access to new spells hard as they must all be uncovered / rediscovered perhaps from ruins of cities belonging to ancient cultures that vanished mysteriously, that sounds awesome and plot ideas spring forth immediately from such a world. Non-magic users can be equally involved in researching those ruins / dungeons as there is obviously going to be monetary rewards for finding lost magical knowledge too.

Your idea of a primitive society discovering magic for the first time is certainly viable. One example could be that devious unknown influences use dreams and portents to lead a young PC with a decent Magical Aptitude to strange places where he/she unwittingly brings knowledge of Black Magics or Greater Summonings to the world.

In my DQ games, I added a lot of flavor text concepts to the three branches of magic that have no real mechanical effect on the game.

The Elemental colleges are all very monastic style traditions, somewhat stylistically similar to Avatar the Last Airbender. Elementalists spend incredible amounts of time in meditation learning to communicate with their chosen elements. Each spell they learn to cast is could be seen as a mental conversation with the element itself.  Once an elementalist has studied at a temple to learn the basics of his/her element, further learning can be done through this meditation while traveling outside of the temple. The common folk of the world appreciate these mages for their abilities to aid farmers during droughts, add firepower to militias, help navigate boats at sea, and so on. A town with an elemental temple is often prosperous and well secured against orc tribes or bandits or whatnot as temple apprentices often practice their arts in service to the town as an exchange with the town sharing food and supplies with the temple.

For your world where people are discovering magic, elemental magic could work in a very similar way to the way I run it through meditation and communing with elements to find new ways to manipulate them. Maybe even immersion into the element (may suck for beginning fire mages) or finding rare forms of the elements and using them like magical foci, a staff topped with a meteorite for the celestial college or gauntlet made from the tanned leather of the fire filled lungs of a dragon for a fire mage. I don't know that lungs can be tanned like skin, but eh... Dragon biology doesn't have to follow real world rules. They breathe fire.

The Entities are my darker colleges. People fear these mages and with good reason since Greater Summoning, Black Magics, and Necromancy are all entities. In many lands openly practicing any college of this branch is forbidden. I love and encourage character concepts that include reasons for a person to practice necromancy or demon summoning for some surprisingly moral reason, but my NPCs are still going to assume the worst about such a person. Also using a spell from Summonings (or lesser summonings if you renamed it after adding greater summonings back into your game) often creates loud tearing sounds as the fabric of reality is twisted to pull forward whatever you have summoned. When a rune mage casts a spell the runes he uses glow red and whiffs of brimstone and sulphur fill the air. Shapers seem less dark to the average person, but some scholars believe that trapping magic into items scars reality itself in permanent harmful ways that we just can't see (like carbon monoxide pollution creates global warming but we don't really see it as it happens).

The Thaumaturgies of my world are ancient magic traditions practiced by the races older than man. While certainly all magically adept creatures can learn and master these arts, the fairies created Ensorcelments and Enchantments, elves created Sorceries of the Mind, Gnomes created the college of Illusions, and the oldest race, Dragons, created Naming.

I don't use any of the custom white / light magics colleges out there in my world as I rather like the idea in the book about the powers of light not using magic. It's a tiny nugget of info hidden in part 25 Definition of Magical Terms: Consecrated Ground. It goes well with my themes of magic being inhuman (thaumaturgies) or evil (entities). I mostly treat elementalism as neutral.

If anyone read this far and likes any of my ideas, please steal them and use them. If you ever think about it, regale me with the tales of your awesome game sessions using these ideas. My ego would love every second of that.

On a separate note from my last response, your suggestion of a guy who picks and chooses from different colleges, whether limited to the same branch of magic or not, could easily become way too OP. I like the idea on the outset, but I wouldn't use it myself. I would however play it if some game master let me. LOL Also keeping each mage as a specialist using only one college encourages variety in characters as everyone can make a guy/gal who can do something no other character can. I have had plenty of game sessions where my players went in search of various mages in the hopes of hiring them to cast specific spells or to travel with the party on an adventure. It allows me to throw a NPC in with the group with his/her own set of goals that may help or undermine the party and I love it.

Fellow DQ players are free to disagree with me here, but this is how my friends and I have viewed the college of Naming Incantations. Namers are masters of Counterspells first and foremost. All of their General  Knowledge Spells are the ability to wave a hand and say "Nah, f*ck off" and undo some incoming spell. They know automatically at rank zero two counterspells for each college of magic, a general knowledge counterspell and a special knowledge counterspell.

The more complex and integral part of Namers is literally their ability to effect things or people that they *know*. So commanding an *Oak* is a fairly useless ability unless that oak gets up and walks forward. Mostly, the only thing a Namer is going to do to an *Oak* is look at its aura, determine if magic has been used on it, and remove that magic if desired. Now if an *Orc* should be the target, then a namer has the added options of charming the creature or compelling obedience.because that is a sentient thing.

As for the "True Name" that each sentient creature gains as it reaches maturity, that is something that I feel exists in Dragonquest worlds that we don't have a real world equivalent to compare against. My way of explaining it is that inside your mind as a sentient creature of a DQ world at some point you come to know and fully understand yourself. In that knowledge is a concept you feel truly describes you and that concept is something that you inherently label with a single word. Like Bruce Wayne came to understand that he is "Batman" you come to realize that you are "Unstoppable" or "Ogrish" or "Clever" or "Lion" or some super important aspect of yourself labeled within a single word. I don't ask the players to come up with a True name, although they are welcome to do so. We generally just say something like, "I say my true name," if the character decides to share that info.

In my games, and this is not from the DQ books, Dragons invented this form of magic as they came to understand the universe. We have been playing this way for decades, so you can imagine my surprise when Skyrim used a similar concept with the language of dragons. I was totally into that and a little annoyed at the same time. For the most part, Namers are scholars who seem to know something about almost everything because they know and understand the meaning of the generic names of pretty much everything. Ambitious (and probably evil) namers actively attempt to learn true names to gain control over others.

I hope this helps.

Just as a little "aside" on this discussion -- the concept of "true name" is, in fact, very historical here on Earth.  Your middle name (assuming you have one) is the final artifact of that whole idea.  In the middle ages, people believed that witches could conjure against you if they knew your true name.  Thus, people began picking up new names while trying to keep their "baptismal name" a secret.  Over time, that convention evolved into the concept of "middle" (or "true") names.  Your first name is the one the public knows.  Your last name helps differentiate you from every other "John" or "Mary" out there, but your middle name is your "true" name and is best kept secret so witches and warlocks can't cast spells on you...

Greetings, (and am glad to see discussions on this site again)

From Arcane Wisdom, the following is found:

    “Naming Incantations

The essay in the original mentions just about all, except for a few things. GM’s and Namers must establish a very close relationship in any campaign for this College may be the focal point of magical knowledge around which the other Colleges revolve. Their power resides in their knowledge. That is their single most valuable weapon, and they will guard it fiercely. If a character developed a new spell within a campaign, the local Namer would strain every sinew to ascertain all the information about it he could, so he may be able to find the proper method of disarming it. The establishment of this College would in all likelihood be tied very closely to the “creation time” in any world, due to this nature of being a guardian of sorts. While appearing disarmingly simple, this College may be the most powerful College in the game if played properly. Mana level would affect these Adepts normally. The inspiration for this College is the Earthsea Trilogy, by Ursula K. LeGuinn.”

In practice, I’m currently playing a Namer.  There are several things a GM should be aware of … first, if the Namer can read folks Aura or determine what incoming spells’ colleges are, you end up in a counterspell battle (either folks have really high resistance OR the NPC mages keep getting area affect counterspells dropped on them to prevent them from casting OR both …), second, Compel Obedience is really powerful (e.g. a group of 20 goblins is thinking about attacking your party, suddenly, 10 of them fail their saving throw vs. Compel and wipe out the other 10 … OR … the charging knights horses come to a screeching halt … OR … one need only get the spell to work and who needs advanced interrogation techniques …)  Naming is not as flashy as Fire Magics, but, it is a sneaky college that might be as disruptive as Lesser Summoning … J

Interesting, but... Out of curiosity, why are you considering
making this modification to the Damage rules for the game?

Bear in mind this is how damage to Fatigue, then Endurance,
appears. But there are rules in the game for doing straight Endurance
damage, and also bear in mind that magical damage from spells under some
circumstances does not go to Fatigue, but directly to Endurance.

I've always considered that damage to Fatigue may be bruises and
the like, but it is of no small importance.

Oh, dear, the 20+ year old debate... ;)

    > The idea of a setting in which a more "primitive" society might not
    > quite have a institution of learning either available or extant-

This concept isn't all that new in the fantasy genre, and while
DRAGONQUEST didn't address this per se, simply because it was the main
rulebook and not a supplement on magic (though I can't quite remember if
there was material addressing this in Arcane Wisdom). Because of the
modular nature of the game, and the section on Magic, it would be easy
enough to fit in something like this.

I will say, that for my own campaigns of the game that I've run,
the first two types of magic were Naming and Rune Magics, though
Shamanism comes a close third in there as well, and depending on the
game world, Witchcraft is up there too.

That said, "primitive" societies (depending on how you define
them, of course) would normally have those who practice some form of
"primitive" Adepts, and who might classed as Shamans or Witches. There
are several variants of the Colleges of Shamanism and the College of
Witchcraft out there, and available on the web.

    > Or, for that matter, perhaps one who might only deign to acquire some
    > learning, but not all?

To me, this is a minor skill for magic, what I call a "lesser
path". There was an article in Dragon Magazine about the Magician Skill
that pretty much starts the process off. :) In such a case, I wouldn't
let said Magician learn certain Colleges, and the maximum Rank that a
Magician could achieve with a Talent, Spell, or Ritual would be highly
    finite.

    > And, another idea, of a "meta mage" who might "pick and choose" from
    > various selections - maybe (only?) from within a branch perhaps?

All I have to say here is... Ickk!

That said, I would argue that if this style of magic fits the
game world, it might be workable. But you'd have to play around with
the magic system for the game somewhat. I do think that Magical
Aptitude (MA) would play a central role in this, however.

Just my 2 copper farthings. :)

...The box said, "Requires Windows 98 or better." So I bought Ubuntu 11.04.

Nobody wanted to play one because one of the mods I had was that their claws prevented the wielding of most weapons except for spears/tridents (I think they were a +4 so I never really got the issue except that the were mostly SCA weenies and needed their swords to be cool?)

It has taken me decades to come up a way to determine what a Dire Wolf's spells might be.  Easy to deal with spreadsheets to do that.

The base idea is rolling equal or less of the MA of the Dire Wolf for each spell of E&E and/or Mind Magics.

If a spell applies, then a spell ranks of 1-5.

I'll post the files to demonstrate.  I don't know how to do an IF statement to clarify it.

Example: Dire Wolf #1 has an MA of 12 while Dire Wolf #2 and #3 have an MA of 11.  D100 is rolled for each Talent (in color) and Spell of a given college (optionally both colleges) and if DR is equal or less than 11 then a D5 is rolled for each successful Spell to determine the rank of said Spell.
    Dire Wolf #1 only rolls D100 < 12 for Mind General Knowledge Counter-spell (Rk 1) and/or E&E T-1 Witchsight (Rk 5), Charming (Rk 5), Location (Rk 2), Mage Lock (Rk 3).

    Dire Wolf #2 only rolls D100 < 11 for Mind Magics Phantasm (D5 = Rk 2) and/or E&E Mass Charming (D5 = Rk 2).

    Dire Wolf #3 rolls D100 < 11 for Mind Magics Empathy (D5 = Rk 3), Controlling (D5 = Rk 3) and/or E&E Telekinesis (D5 = Rk 5), E&E General Knowledge (D5 = Rk 5), Enhancing Enhancement (D5 = Rk 1).
