Hey all,

I am new here, but love playing Dragonquest!
To make it easier on myself as the DM I have made two computer programs for Dragonquest. One is a random encounter generator, You input the terrain and the encounter probability and it tells you if there was an encounter, if there was it tells you what the players encountered, and for about 25 of the more common monsters it will also output all of their stats and such. The other is a strike chance modifier. You check the boxes that apply for the current attack and input the player's SC, the target's Def, and then the player's roll. And it will tell you if they hit and if it was a direct to endurance or grevious injury it(but won't tell you what grevious injury if it was one).

They are still a work in progress but I wanted to put them out there if any of you wanted to check them out.

And if you do want to check them out I would love your feed back when you use them!!

THanks

I run a DQ game every weekend. I would love to take those programs for a spin. My wife wants to try running but fears being in charge of the math. Your tools may solve that for her (which means I may actually get to play one day).

Interesting.  I had started to create a MySQL database that would abstract characters/monsters right before Christmas to learn more about MySQL.  DB still would needs alot of work (no procedures yet) and a front end but the data model is pretty much the first step in coming up with a character creation and maintenance solution.  I have shelved it until I am gainfully employed again.

I am glad for this opportunity! It will give me the motivation to make the time to finish making some updates to the code that I have been meaning to.

Also, FYI It is written in Java so you will need that capability to use them(I think that shouldn't be a problem).

When you get it any feedback would be awesome!

Hi,

I forgot, I had already loaded my 2 tools to the DQ Yahoo site:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/DQ-RULES/files/Tools/

Encounter Table will create random encounters based on location.  It contains both the encounter table in the book plus one I created.  It pulls encountered “creatures” from both the book and the DQ Bestiary with some customs (e.g. Bestiary on/off, dinosaurs on/off, …)

Specific Encounter will then specify the monster’s stats (with customizable and random weapons/armor).  I then port this tab to another excel sheet to avoid the monsters changing when you hit enter and the random number generators change.

I have a weather generator if anyone is interested.

Enjoy.

David

I also have a tool for DMs (and maybe players), a web-based map editor that I built for an unrelated game. You can find it at http://www.androhil.com - look for the map editor link on the left to find the version that works for players who aren't logged in.

The only real issue for those who aren't playing Androhil is that you can't save - and any bugs that I haven't found yet, of course!

I might put something together-
possibly in the next few weeks
just thought I'd check

Not certain though -
(I'm thinking I might run a SPI Universe series of sessions, but have to get some things together 1st before any of these possibilites)

Hey Gang, I was just wondering if the loss of Agility referred to in this rule also causes TMR to drop...

A figure struck by a Class A Missile or Thrown Weapon will have his Agility lowered until the weapon is removed.

Whenever a figure suffers effective damage from a Class A Missile or Thrown Weapon, it has lodged itself in the target’s body and reduces his Agility by 3. The weapon remains lodged until a Pass action is executed to remove it. When any barbed weapon is removed (arrow, spear, etc.), the figure takes D10‑4 damage directly to Fatigue (not absorbed by armor). If the weapon is a Pole weapon, the Agility loss is 5 and the damage to remove it is D10‑2

... in any cases, I think this is an interesting rule that puts some appropriate sting into getting hit by an arrow or spear.

I have always ruled that the loss of agility lowers the TMR correspondingly.

Subject: Re: A question about Rule 20.4
hm, at the same time, if the AG loss is, for example, because of pain or encumrance (such as an arrow in the chest) then it perhaps would not lower TMR (unless it was in the leg).
GM's discretion would have to come in, and it is possible to come up with a roll vs a difficulty factor to make the determination of whether the arrow hit the chest or leg, etc (but, off hand, I do not know if there is any published DQ game mechanic that includes this, but something from a long time past comes to mind from either another sytem or a game accessory)

but, this is further complication in game mechanics that the player group may or may not want to get into..

(i have a mental picture of a bipedal figure which looks like a "gingerbread man," if you will with circular regions each with a particular percent range for any of leg, arm or torso)

but, one of the notions of RPGing, in general, is that players get a chance to be the heroes - just like in the movies - unless it is in the script for a character to die like a hero, then "magically" their injuries somehow never pierce internal organs and such lol

Hi

Since I'm very inexperienced with DragonQuest, and many potential players will come with preconceived notions about what you can do in a fantasy rpg, I'm hoping some on this list with more DQ experience might shed some light on how to handle common issues.

My issue is how to handle a player who say they want to play a cleric style character in DQ.

There are spells for handling undead, and there are healing spells. But, have any of you ever done anything else about things like spell domains and rules for divine intervention or something more specific about the character's relation to their god?

Taking it even further, have anyone ever tried to do RQ style cults for DQ?

Hi Andreas,

Welcome to DQ!

When DQ first came out I was playing D&D and players wanted to translate their D&D characters to DQ.  I used Mind Magics for clerics.  However you will find several items in the files on this group site that focus on religion, priests and clerics.  I've done some experimenting, but have no strong opinion on them.

The original discussions related to Religion in DQ and the files associated with them.

In the files section is Spirits religion and planes v1.3.pdf from 2006 which I believe supersedes the V1.1 in the DQN-list Files area.

In the DQN-list files section
Spirits and religion v1.1 and Changes pdfs
College of White Magicke pdf
Priests and Paladins of Dragonquest pdf
A brief paragraph in the Thieves World Rules extract entitled "Believed Missing in Action".

Was back when I was running a game I mostly left religion out. It existed but at a level and place that the PCs had not yet encountered. It was easier that way. The players were going to eventually “run in to it” but the gang broke up and I have never found a group interested in DQ since then.

DQ seems to have been written with Druid type characters standing in for clerics. Have you considered that? Perhaps align a deity with each school of magic?

I have not played since the internet got popular so have not really looked over the new material. People far more clever than I have worked on this “issue”.

Hello & Welcome to DQ Andreas,

One may role play as clericish or incorporate a religion context within the basic framework of DQ using the healer skill and/or one of the spell caster types.

I suppose that it all depends upon what specific expectations there are of each player and/or yourself as GM

a few things to note in passing are the ranger skill to heal with herbs and to what extent your setting has such things as potions available.

But, one main thing, to me, is how DQ sets itself apart from all other systems in how it tends to precipitate role play itself.

I think, if you just "go for it" with a session or two then you might find out how liberating it is to role play outside of the "alignment / class box" :)

Subject: Re: D&D style clerics in DragonQuest
speaking for myself, I'd like to get a Forgotten Realms campaign setting-
within the Drow/Underdark in particular.

I have a rough idea in my mind what to do to go about it (obviously for female drow priestesses in particular).

But, I will say that I like to "mix it up" in the magic system and, in a sense, allow for a character to either focus in a "college" or to be diverse and pick any spell in a branch (thaum, or elemental, etc) it might be a bit of a departure from the way the basic magic system is put together, but I like to allow for "anything is possible" (to a point).

Also, I'd put together whatever custom spells (based on my reading of varous series which involve the setting - (based on my reading of "The Dark Elf (Trillogy)," and a few other series which cover the settins such as "War of the SpiderQueen")

Another thing that I sort of toy with in my mind is allowing for a character to be a spellcaster in either a limited extent (cast some or a few spells), or be a generalist (possibly be capable of casting (almost) every spell - but likely without so many additions to the % chance as within the "normal" way that a caster would

If need be, I'd either adapt existing spells or possibly have to "spell research" any which are not similar to any others already (um) spelled out.

But, my main RPG since the outset of gaming  has been DQ ever since 1981
so you may or may not want to figure yourself as being so comfortable with "breaking the system" as me lol

oh, fyi I'm also the same individual who just posted a thing about putting together a Universe campain in the Seattle area (I just get fed up with that other email account because it gets so freakin spammed haha)

Well, so much for a soft launch...

Yes, there is now a PDF copy of Poor Brendan's Almanac on DriveThruRPG (and its sister sites).  It's in preparation for making a hardcopy version available (and providing copies to backers of the "Wilderness" adventure kickstarter.

I was going to wait a bit before mentioning it here, or elsewhere, but I guess I should be glad that it's getting around.  (Out of curiosity, do you know if the site where you saw it is also part of the OneBookshelf (RPGNow/DriveThruRPG/etc.) network?

You'll also see PDF/print versions of "The Water Works" adventure coming soon, and then "The Wilderness of Ordurak" adventure.  We're also contemplating making the map for the Wilderness (a fantastic piece of work by Stephen Peto that very much looks like it came from the drawing board of Redmond Simonsen) available as a standalone piece, for people who are interested in getting copies of that, but don't want the whole adventure.

There will be a more complete update coming shortly.

I'll probably offer to run that every week until a player group forms.

I am thinking that I'll then switch with Universe every other week, once that happens.

I do not know if there will be enough people to start a session, so this week might only be for a introduction to recruit new players.

Somewhere around 2PM is when I show up at a venue called "Around The Table" in Lynnwood.

Welcome back. We all are playing DnD 5e now. After DQ v4 was “released” by Blind Duck Enterprises in 2012 in such a pathetic form (who has that many d30’s? Seriously?) we all just caved in and started playing 5e DnD.

January fools.

The list has really slowed down. I only know a couple of people who roll play any more and our schedules do no align (and they DO play DnD 3.5). There was a crowdfunded adventure by Roger Thorm that has sort of disappeared from view. There is also a DragonQuest FaceBook page “hosted" by the DQPA.

I do hope you have better luck than I do with this game.

Yeah, I know it's disappeared. I never even heard of it until I

I'm not a fan of Facebook, so won't be found there at all. Is
anyone still maintaining the original DQPA site?

Well, I've got players who are eager to get into it, two of whom
are from one of the original gaming groups, and I've got a co-worker who
