Hi, everyone.  I'm finally purging.  For sale to a good home:
  • DragonQuest (2d ed., hardbound, well used but loved) and DragonQuest (3d ed., softbound, practically brand new, never used).  Includes adventures Frontiers of Alusia, Blade of Allectus, Palace of Ontoncle, the Enchanted Wood, House of Kurin (photocopy), and GM screen.
  • GammaWorld (1st ed., I believe -- says copyright 1986 -- good condition).  Includes modules GW1, GW4, GW7, and GW8.
  • Chill (1st ed., good condition).  Includes modules Highland Terror and Haunter of the Moor.

I'd rather just unload everything at once.  $35 o.b.o. for the lot, and that includes shipping.  PayPal gladly accepted.

Let me know if you're interested.  Thanks!

Hi, everyone.  Thanks for all the responses to my post about selling my old RPG materials.  Judging by the number of offers I received, I clearly should have charged a higher price!  lol.  Anyway, they're going to the first person who responded.  If for some reason the sale falls through, I'll go to the second person who responded, etc.  If you don't hear from me, that means you were too far down the list.

Thanks.  Happy gaming.

Subject: Kickstarting a new DQ Adventure
I've been thinking about creating a new DQ adventure with some crowdsourced support (since it's not something that would ever be commercially viable). To that end, I've written up a preliminary proposal for creating a new DragonQuest adventure:

https://rthorm.wordpress.com/2011/08/19/preliminary-corwdsource-dq-adventure-proposal/

I'm curious to know whether this is something some of you would contribute to, or whether this is totally off-base. I'm also interested in suggested refinements to the proposal before I put it out there. To be clear, I'm not soliciting any pledges at this point, but I'm interested in feedback on the idea.

If it's something that might be of interest to enough people, I'm thinking of opening it up at the beginning of September and seeing if I can get enough pledges for it in 30 days.

Thanks for your comments, either here on on my blog.

Interesting.

I think the Kickstarter model is the way to go. You know you have the bases covered before development begins and thus feel more on solid ground.

But, I think you need to pretty specific about what you want to deliver. Pagecount, amount of artwork you plan to include, print quality and so on. Also, it should be easy to toss in a few dollars since you will need "padding" in between the hardcore supporters to reach the target.

I'd commit a couple of Andrew Jackson's.

Subject: Re: Kickstarting a new DQ Adventure
As with the other DQ adventures and the "Poor Brendan's Almanac" supplement, I think there's little risk in it. Since it's original work, there's not really a copyright issue. And at this point, the trademark for DragonQuest has been allowed to lapse, so it would be hard to assert some special privilege for any of the special terms from DQ. Most of them (stats, etc.) are pretty generic, anyhow.

There's nothing "official" about this, or any other DQ-related project at this point. That was a lot of the issue with things in the past. Clearly there's no one to call this an officially approved for use with DQ adventure.

Ultimately, the final product is going to be released under Creative Commons or some other free-for-distribution license. There's no sale in this (other than the very abstract sale of the right to aid in some decisions), contributors will get to see the finished version early, but that's all. The contributions are just that, support to allow for the production of the adventure.

I was asked if I was going to actually use Kickstarter to manage this. I would certainly like to if I can, but Kickstarter doesn't take every proposed project, and this is a little bit of an obscure, niche kind of project, in which case, I'd like to go ahead and use the Kickstarter format for it, but it would be outside the bounds of Kickstarter, so I'm relying on the goodwill of people who agree to pledge to this to actually follow through if the goal is met and the contributions are due.

There have been a other few questions about this idea. I'll have another post with some other answers tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks for the feedback!

Subject: Re: Kickstarting a new DQ Adventure
I've gotten a few other questions about this project, so I have some more answers about this idea.

One of the questions was whether setting the goal at the end of September would allow enough time to pull together enough support. My thinking was that I would reach most of the likely supporters just in the DQ groups, and that, in that case, it wouldn't take much time to see whether or not there was enough support for the project. But it's a fair question; do others of you also think that's too short a timeline? Would it make sense to open it up through to December, and make it a 2012 project?

It was also suggested that it should be possible to contribute a smaller amount than the lowest premium level. That was my intent, as well, but I guess I didn't state that explicitly. As with Kickstarter projects, you can contribute any amount. The premiums I outlined are a list of proposed rewards or opportunities at various levels of contribution, but if you only want to contribute $1 just to get your name in the credits, that would be fine. But only contributors at the premium levels would get advance copies; a $5 contribution would help fund the project, but wouldn't get a copy of it until it was released for general distribution.

A couple people asked about proposed page count. I would expect it to be at least twice the size of "The Water Works," which is 10 pages (plus the title page) without any internal artwork other than the map on the last page. So, roughly 24 pages for the adventure. If there are new rules introduced in the adventure (new college of magic, new skills, etc.) that would be in addition to that base page count.

Those figures are also for page count without art. For "Poor Brendan's Almanac," I used all clip art and freely usable material for the illustrations. I could certainly do that again with this project. Art is also expensive to commission, so I don't have expectations to have a lot of custom art in the adventure. But I think there was usually not much in the way of additional art in the various SPI adventures, so this would probably be along those lines, as well. There would, of course, also be maps and diagrams as part of the adventure. I already have a volunteer to help with cartography.

Thanks for the feedback, and keep asking questions.

Subject: Re: Kickstarting a new DQ Adventure
I would certainly contribute in the $20 range and perhaps more if I thought there was new material that would be useful beyond the actual adventure itself. A magic college or skills perhaps.

I agree with others that September seems like an awfully short time but pushing it out to December means pushing it into the Christmas shopping season where maybe people won't be so inclined to contribute? Maybe. Dunno.

If you aren't familiar with Rite Publishing they have used a patronage model to produce their adventures. I only know about them because of a cartographer they use, Jon Roberts, and have only read about their patronage based efforts on their site.

http://fantasticmaps.wordpress.com/

This page is for a product coming out soon and they used Kickstarter for it but I'm pretty sure prior to that they did it on their own in some way. At the bottom of the page is their patronage levels.

http://ritepublishing.com/thedemolishedones.html

And on the subject of maps and cartography. All of our gaming, DQ or otherwise, is done via MapTool (http://www.rptools.net/). Maps that can't be exported from the adventure at 50px/hex or better to be used in MapTool reduce the value to me considerably. They also need to come in both Players and GMs versions. Maps that are only provided with GM notations all over them means I have to recreate them myself in MapTool or GIMP. This also reduces the value of the product to as well. It is common practice to include both a players and a GMs version of maps but wanted to get it said early on.

This is a recently released module that was not only in print and PDF form but also came with digital content in the form of a pre-built campaign for MapTool (and other VTTs).

http://fantasticmaps.wordpress.com/2011/08/24/breaking-news/#more-1032

I bring this up not as a demand but to bring awareness to what can be done nowadays. I realize that the market for a DQ product is tiny and is unlikely to justify the amount of effort that went into that Pathfinder product.

I just saw an interesting article at BoingBoing about an artist who is crowdsourcing images of the 72 demons from the Ars Goetia, which was inspired by the Lesser Key of Solomon.

link: http://boingboing.net/2011/09/01/72-demons-crowd-sourced-alternative-illustrations-of-the-ars-goetia.html

The list of demon names will be instantly familiar to anyone who has ever looked through the College of Greater Summoning.

Anyone who is actively running a campaign with a Greater Summoner (or who likes to pepper their campaign with the occasional demon, just to keep things interesting) will likely be interested in following this project.

Subject: Three DQ Adventure Ideas
So... I started talking about the idea in August, and now, all of a sudden, it's November. I haven't been able to spend time on this the way I would like, which is the whole point of the Kickstarter (or IndieGoGo, or whatever) venture; to be able to make some financial space in order to be able to spend some time on the idea.

At the moment, I'm looking at three possible ideas for the adventure, and I'm interested in getting some feedback about which (if any) of these ideas have the most appeal. If you want a bit more description of each, read the article here: https://rthorm.wordpress.com/2011/11/04/three-dq-adventure-kickstarter-ideas/

The three concepts, briefly, are as follows:

* The Earth Works *

Clues found in the treasures collected from The Water Works point to the existence of another Works, this one dedicated to Earth Magics.

These were places that had been homes to scholars of magic, and were taken over by evil forces in a war half a century ago. This could serve as a standalone adventure, but would also connect to the history and setting introduced in my previous adventure, The Water Works.

* The Wilderness of A—– *

A frontier baron wants to complete a road to connect his lands to more populated realms, but it must go through a wilderness where problems have been preventing the work from being completed.

This would include a map of some of the region. Not as extensive as the Frontiers of Alusia, obviously, but perhaps twice the area of the Overland Map from the Camp of Alla-Akabar and considerably more detailed. This could possibly be an adventure that would feature a new college of magic: the College of Sun Magics.

* The Coven of X—– *

A political adventure focused on a power struggle going on in a coven of witches (College of Witchcraft) which the characters become caught up in.

These are all just sketches at this point. If there seems to be a trend in favor of one or another of these, I will flesh it out a bit more as I work toward the final proposal for the crowdsource fundraiser.

Even if you don't think you'd contribute, but you have some ideas about the adventure concepts, I'm glad to hear what you think, even if it's just to vote on which of these you think is most interesting.

The fundraiser for this is now live at IndieGoGo:

http://www.indiegogo.com/The-Wilderness-of-A-a-DragonQuest-Adventure?a=323113

The basic goal is $750, for a smaller, less elaborate adventure, but I think it's a more achievable goal. If we significantly overshoot that goal, then the adventure will get larger and more elaborate.

I hope there's still enough interest in DragonQuest adventures that this will work out. In addition to asking for contributions, I'd really appreciate it if you would help spread the word about this project.

Best,

Rodger

I handled it more straight forward. The character SC is de weapon base chance. A character's SC with Rk 0 in some weapon is Weapons's BC + character's MD

Are you looking to an alternative to the rules for this situation?

The Weapon Cross Use rule [103] in Poor Brendan's Almanac allows for using similar weapons that a character does not have specific skill for, but is closely related to a weapon the character does have skill in. So, for example, a character who is ranked with a broadsword but only has a sabre available can use it with some limited skill, rather than being forced to use it as unranked.

Otherwise, I just follow rule [17.1]: "To attack with any unranked weapon, the Strike Chance is equal to the weapon's Base Chance unmodified."

That's exactly the way we have always done it. If not stated like that in the rules I think it is at least implied.

The fundraiser for the production of a new DragonQuest adventure is almost over and will wrap up tomorrow night. We've already made the basic goal, but it would be great to make the stretch goal of $1500 in order to have at least a 32-page adventure (it's going to be min. 16 pages at this point).

We just got a preliminary map from our cartographer, Stephen Peto, and I've posted it on the IndieGoGo site, as well as on my blog. A lot of the detail in it is still unfinished (it's very much still a work in progress), but you can see the beginnings of SPI style in it already.

We've also had some discussion about the artist who is doing some illustration for the adventure, and you can find examples of his style on the site, as well.

http://www.indiegogo.com/The-Wilderness-of-A-a-DragonQuest-Adventure?a=323113

If you were thinking about contributing, but wanted to wait and see how it was going, now is the time to get in.

Hey Guys,

I was looking through my DQ resources and I discovered that I have only a map for Tom Robinson's capsule adventure, The Swamp. If someone has this, could they please post a pdf of the text of the adventure to the files section?

Also, if there aren't any issues, I'd be happy to post Mr. Robinson's capsule adventure, The River, which I do have on hand.

Just let me know...

Giant Spider
-- Andrew South (llew@werple.mira.net.au)
The Giant Spider is a creature which results from a Special Knowledge
spell of the College of Spider Magics (see the Archive for more info about
this college). [The GM may wish to interpolate some statistics in order
to use the Giant Spider as a creature, rather than a transformed adept.]
The spell which brings about this transformation is as follows:
SpS-11. Become Spider
Range: Adept only
Duration: 1 minute + 1 minute/Rank
Experience Multiple: 500
Base Chance: 5%
Resist: None
Effects: This spell transforms the adept into a gigantic spider of
hideous aspect. The creature will have the following statistics:

Description: This abominable creature is usually venomous-looking in
the extreme, and is of terrifying size. The most disturbing thing about
it is probably the fact that the adept's intelligence can be plainly
seen glittering in its multiple eyes.

PS 15+Rank [23-29] FT 20+Rank [30-35]
MD 1D5+15 [15-20] PC Adept's Own [15-22]
AG 1D5+18 [18-23] AP Agility - 10 [5-10]
MA Adept's Own [17-22] PB 1D5-1 [2-6]
WP Adept's Own [16-23] BV None [ ?? ]
EN 15+Rank [23-30] SZ 15 + Rank [ ?? ]

Armour: The spider's tough skin will absorb 5 DP.
Weapons: The spider may attack in either Melee or Close Combat with a
vicious bite (Base Chance of 50% and [D+4] damage). The bite will have
Rank equal to one-half the adept's Rank with this spell. If it inflicts
effective damage, it injects a lethal venom that will inflict 5 points
of damage each Round (+1 for every 4 Ranks, rounded down). Its effects
last for a period of 1D10 Rounds. In Close Combat, the spider may also
entangle a single opponent in webbing from its spinnerettes, which will
have the effect of a Web spell (SpS-5) on that target only.
Magic: While in spider form, the adept retains the ability to use any
magic he is normally able to perform.

Subject: Virtual Gaming Tables
Hi,

Anyone out there using Virtual Gaming Table software? I know it has been asked before but this is they type of question where answers become dated and it has been some time since this question was last asked.

From some google sleuthing, I see that Phergus (who I think is here under a different pseudonym?) was able to get the RPTools folks to work in hexagonal grid support. From what I can tell there has been no significant customization for Dragonquest in any VTT solution -- is that correct?

My brother and nephew will be in town in a few weeks and if there is consensus of continuing beyond that VTT will be necessary for us.

By any chance has anyone worked up maps for The Enchanted Wood? Trying to maybe get a few things done so I can throw up some maps on my proector when they are here.

My group uses a software package now known as VTable, aka Gametable 2.0, but not to be confused with the website service with a similar name. The VTable software supports hex maps, uses pogs, and has a die rolling macros feature. People can create and import their own pogs to use as well as map features. Here is a link where it can be found at sourceforge: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gametableproj/

We have found it to be adequate, but do some research about it to see if it is to your liking. It needs to be installed on each persons computer and one person will host the game from his computer. There can be some network issues to set up and host a game, relating to opening ports in your firewall for the other people to connect to the game you are hosting. The other players will need to know your IP address and which port to connect to (there is a default port).

Anyway. That is what we use.

For the first time I'm reading the DQ Newsletters and feel the need to comment on some of the things I've read.

One person posted an equipment list for skills. One of the longest lists was for Healer. My experience both as player and GM is that once a PC gets to Rk 3 Healer, most of the suggested equipment is superfluous.

Another article was describing the foil and epee (among other shipboard weapons) and got them reversed. I spotted this immediately having at one time been a foil fencer. I see where this is corrected later by a foil fencer.

In the same article there was discussion about Racial EP cost for swimming. In my campaign the expression is that "Dwarves swim as well naked as they do in plate" i.e., like a stone. Giants are treated the same way.

Body-fat, or rather lack thereof. Large vessels encompass large pockets of
air, you let out the air they sink. The less body fat you have the less
flotation you have.

Depends on the method of flying. Magic obviously ignores a great deal,
though IIRC the rules mention that the effects of spells are based on a
human sized figure, so flying spells may not have the proper effect on
Giants. It was the basis I used to rule that Whirlwind Vortex successfully
cast upon a Roc just inflicted damage instead of ripping it apart. (Since
then I made a pact with the PC's; if they didn't use instant death spells
then neither would the GM.)

Flying (more properly gliding) with a hang-glider for a Giant is
problematical given the needed surface area and the supports needed.

I've never run any of the original modules in MapTool as I ran them years and years ago. Enchanted Wood would be pretty cool to run this way. There are PDF versions available that you could pull images from though I typically just remake any maps so that they only have what I want on them.

The hex support in MapTool is sufficient to game with though I often use a square grid because it makes it easy to use various map tiles.

We use some simple macros in MT to track EN & FT. Track states like prone or walking unseen.

There are other free and commercial VTT packages that would also work but I'm happy with MT.

I have uploaded three new documents to the files area that we use in my campaign:

      Backfire Table
A more practical approach to Adepts backfiring their spells. A bit more gentle and kinder but still with quite effective results. At least you won't melt your brain out of your ears (unless you're a complete and utter moron).

      Focus Implements
Bringing spell casting into the new millennium and out of ages past. Cast more often with a more generous bonus and build in Ranks with your selection of spells. Casting becomes more akin to wielding a melee weapon without the preparation penalty at each cast. Adepts won't feel like second class citizens to their melee counterparts.

      Secondary Skills
More Skills for players to test their mettle against. These have really helped to liven up play for my group. Includes formulas for calculating each skill, descriptions and experience costs for Ranking.

Personally I see no need for a kindler, gentler backfire table.  Unless the PC is a gambler, there is a very low chance of backfire anyway.  Baby characters might be more prone to backfires, but most colleges' modifiers reduce even that.

Focus implements - Recently had one player complaining about Multiple Independently Targeted Spells (MITS).  Once ranked, the impact of spells is devastating.  Why make it even easier for Mages?

We generally play only one character per player, so some of the disabling backfires can effectively remove a player from the game.  For long combats and parties without high ranks in remove curse, that means someone can do  nothing for long periods of time.  After decades of playing, going through the role playing exercise of amnesia or sensory deprivation gets old.

My players only play one character in a session.   Why aren't they ranked higher in remove curse?  Isn't any of your PCs a Healer?  Two simple solutions for what are *minor* curses.

If backfires are happening all the time, your PCs need to consider other alternatives.  If you're just being hyperbolic, please consider the ROLEPLAYING opportunity.  Currently a PC in my campaign is suffering from a death curse that prevents her from using magick.  She is RPGing it to the nines.

Long ago, one PC had encountered a Demon who actively resisted all the spells the PC cast and the PC wound up with five backfires at the same time, not to mention the various fatigue loses from casting spells and bacfires.  This is just before the PCs got involved in one of the longest combats I have ever run.  Everyone had fun.

I've been GMing and playing DQ since it came out, I have never heard a complaint about the backfire table.  This includes from three players who lost PCs by backfiring their instant death spells, having it take effect upon themselves and failing their savings throw.

With a good group, 3 consecutive backfires is cause for hilarity, even for the unfortunate player.

In my various campaigns, I like to provide the players with a guide explaining the region they will be adventuring in along with some basic information about the locals, religion, currency, some adventuring hooks and a map.

I have placed a new file in the "Adventures" directory named, "The Iron Cross - Player Guide.pdf". Enjoy!

That looks really sweet! I would love to play in your game after reading that, which I would imagine being just the reaction you'd hope for!
