As long as you have the time, money and experience yes.  But it will be two spells raised one rank, then the other two spells raised one rank.  So for example all spells are going from Rank 4 to Rank 5 then it will take a total of 10 days to raise all four spells one rank.

Thank you for your reply, however just so I understand more clearly, if I have say four spells that meet the
qualifications may I raise them all one rank during one training session.

Given sufficient time money and experience you can raise all skills/spells
that qualify up one rank between adventures.

As many as time and XP allow you. The only limit is to not "study" (Or weapon or skill)the same spell twice a day. I mean, divide the day in two halves, and spend 1 half in one spell, and the other in a new one, or a weapon, or a Skill.

Is different when you must spend days to upkeep profesions. In that case, count 1 hole day, and can only spend the day on this.

Regards.

DragonQuest (my favorite RPG from years ago) and all other RPGing games were recently added to the rpg database site by the same guys that did www.boardgamegeek.com.

It lists all the products, allows you to mark ownership, rate the games, add missing games (as well as home grown versions), and generally has the means to grow information about Dragonquest however you like. See:

Group: dqn-list Message: 3321 From: brockrwood Date: 10/1/2009
Subject: Shield Rush and Being Knocked "Prone" in DragonQuest
Does anyone in the group have a solution to an odd gap I recently discovered in the Second Edition rules: How do you
handle it when a figure is knocked "prone"?

At section 23.5 (DQOS section numbering), the rules provide for a Shield Rush special attack. If the attack strike check is successful, the target takes D10-2 damage. In addition, the target has to make a roll versus three times his agility. If he fails the roll, he is knocked "prone."

I actually had this happen in combat between a character and an NPC. With the 20 percent advantage that comes from a shield rush occurring at the end of a "charge" action, a shield rushing attacker will have a decent strike chance. If the shield rush attack is successful, there is a fairly significant chance that the target will be knocked prone.

Now, knocking someone down seems like a good thing to do in combat. But the DQ rules don't provide for whether a "prone" character can still attack or take other action while "prone." The rules do say that "rising up" is a "Pass" action, so I suppose that the prone character can get back on his feet as his next action. If he tries to rise up, is he prone only for the current pulse? The current pulse and the next pulse? Can he evade while he is prone? Can he evade while he is "rising up"?

The rules do state that an attacker gets a 20 percent bonus when attacking someone who is prone, so it wouldn't make sense to let a prone character "evade," would it?

What about initiative? Does a "prone" player with a higher initiative
still have the initiative in the next pulse between two engaged opponents?

The essential problem is that the rules don't explain which options (if any) are available to a "prone" character nor how long it takes to
"recover" from being "prone." The rules explain a lot about what happens when you are "stunned" but not what happens when you are knocked "prone."

      Thanks in advance!

The way I GM it, a prone character is last in the initiative order, can't
evade and rises up during his/her initiative, so is prone during the
opponent's action. I do allow a prone character to use their shield if they
have one. One pulse is sufficient to rise, unless the PC/NPC is wearing
      plate armor.

I only make the agility check if the strike does damage

In an older mail I ask about engaging. Prone characters don't engage
(because they don't have facing). However I let them attack, move (1/4
of TMR) and try to "close and grapple" any adjacent character.

Jeffery, what you say makes sense. Thanks for the ideas!

I wish there had been a *real* third edition of DragonQuest. It seems like there are still quite a few loose ends that need to be tied up. Right now, all a GM can do is wait until he finds the "loose end" (such as what to do with prone characters) and then use his discretion and come up with a plausible solution.

Maybe the members of the DQN-list and the DQPA can talk Gerry Klug, Eric Goldberg, David Ritchie, and Edward Woods into releasing a new "indie" game that would, in effect, be the third edition?

Where are those guys, anyway? Still in the gaming industry?

      Hi!

Well, I went and did it! I re-started my old DragonQuest campaign which had lain dormant, like the Dragon Smaug, for 20 years!

Want to play? Live in the Denver metro area? Just send an e-mail to brockrwood@eurekais.com and I will give you the details.

Or, just join "http://www.meetup.com" and search for "The League of Extraordinary Gamers" meetup group. You can RSVP to a DragonQuest session on the calendar.

I am also interested in playing in others' campaigns if there is another DragonQuest campaign running in the Denver area. Just send me an e-mail if you are looking for players. Send me an e-mail even if you aren't looking for players just so I know you are out there and so I can bounce a couple of rules questions off of you!

      Thanks in advance!

        Hi

I have been on the lookup for a copy of DQ a while, and just managed to find a shrink wrapped mint hard cover. The thing is, this was more than I bargained for, and I'm thinking maybe I should leave it in shrink wrap and re-sell it and get a "working" copy instead.

Anyone care to give me an estimate what it would sell for?

Depending on vendor, venue, condition and timing, I have seen 2nd Ed.
HC's go for between USD 18.00 and USD 85.00, wirh average price about
        USD 55.00.
I've never seen a shrinkwrapped copy, not even way back when it was
still in print, and while it's certainly possible SPI produced them,
it's more likely this was done by a vendor somewhere along the line of
        ownership.
If nothing else, it should be an immaculate copy, and the bindery work
on my DQ HCs is excellent, very sturdy, so with care it should outlive
us all (as any good book should).
I wouldn't part with it until I had at least two back-up copies.

        Thanks for your feedback, Don!

I took it out of shrinkwrap, and while it looks pristine, the cover have started to bend a bit. I at once put in in pressure to keep it flat. I sure hope it flattens it.

I do hope I have a gem here, but I haven't been able to red it yet...

I have decided to try to make a character for DQ, having finally read through all of my DQ2 book.

In paragraph 5.4 it says "A character's Perception begins at 5". Now, am I supposed to spend my points for primary stats on that as well? 5 seem to be awfully low, and having to spend points on it makes it impossible for my test character to have more than two stats above 10!

Am I missing something obvious? It looks kind of expensive to use EP to raise that stat...

Perception is a secondary characteristic and is not part of your points during character generation. It can be modified by Race, but the starting value is the starting value. You get the opportunity to buy Perception with Experience Points [87.8].

One of the differences between the SPI White 2nd Edition and the Bantam 2nd Edition is that this starting value was set to 8 in the Bantam Edition. This is the value I generally use.

Later 2nd ED Dragonquest changed that to a starting value of 8 for perception.

        Thanks for the replies guys.

Even with 8 as a starting value, using the experience points to raise it to at least 10 is ridiculously expensive. 1000 points for one point?
I can't imagine any starting character having that much EP as a human.

I'm thinking I'm misunderstand how it's used, or otherwise not seeing how 8 can be decent. From my point of view it looks like characters will be bumbling blind fools for the first ten sessions.

Well, it IS the cheapest of characteristics to raise using experience points (But I would tend to concentrate on skill building).

In play Perception is quite often modified and although Rule 4.3 outlines the procedure for direct Perception checks during game play it also says:

"The gamesmaster should not avail himself of this procedure constantly during an expedition. He should use it when the players request more information than he is willing to give them, when the characters venture into foreign places or lands or meet alien people or races, and when a decision is necessary to speed play. Remember that constant use of this procedure makes the outcome of the adventure increasingly luck-dependent. A judicious GM will use the procedure no more than once per hour (real time) during an expedition.

The GM will stint those players who constantly request use of the Perception roll when it comes time for experience awards (see 86). A player who allows dice-rolls to usurp the responsibilities of his mind deserves no better."

Your starting EP are not enough to raise any characteristic, including PC.
You will have to adventure to gain the experience to raise PC.

Use your starting Exp to raise rank in weapons or spells.

Many thanks John! That gives me a nice hint on how to handle things. Time to re-read the rules. Now I have to make a bunch of characters and try to make sense of it.

        Makes sense I guess. Thanks!

I have attached a quick and dirty character gen to help you out

        Roll Characteristic points

        Roll 2d10: 5 & 7 = 12 which gives 91 pts, 22 maximum
Per rule, I can have 1 stat at 22 and two more at 21

I hope to make the stereotypical dwarf fighter, so I assign as follows
        PS:22 MD:17 AG:11 EN:21 MA:5 WP:15
FT is figured as 22 and PC is set to 8
        TMR is figured as 4

I choose gender (male). Rolling for handedness I get 2 on my D5 and 5 on my D10 so he is right-handed.

I want to be a dwarf and have a 25% chance. I roll 32 so no go. I decide Orc might also fit my concept (20% chance), roll a 16 and now I am an Orc! I look up my Racial experience modifier and it is 0.9 so I advance faster than normal. I look up my modifiers: PS +2, AG -1, EN +1, MA -2, WP -2, FT +2.

        So now I am PS:24 MD:17 AG:10 EN:22 MA:3 WP:13 FT: 24 PC: 8

I skip the Aspect rules and head to Heritage. A roll of 51 on the Social Status Chart under orc gives "Adventurer". The next chart shows I get 1.2 x starting xp, and my money multiplier is 5. My next roll of 56 shows me as legitimate. Now I roll for silver pennies and experience, getting a 46 and a 74, which gives 120 xp and 65 sp. 120 x 1.2 = 144 xp; 65 x 5 = 325 sp at start.

I buy a Battle Axe (cost 20), Chain mail (cost 200), a hand axe (cost 15) and a small round shield (cost 8)

For skills, he automatically gets speak Common at Rank 8. He spends 75*0.9 = 67 xp on Rank 0 Battle Axe. He now has 53 xp left. he decides to buy two levels of shield. Rank 0 costs 25 * 0.9 = 22 xp, as does Rank 1. He now has 23 xp left which he will save for next time.

Now that he is armed and armoured we need to calculate and re-calculate stuff.
Small round shield is MD -2 , and def bonus 3%/rank. Chain mail is AG -2 and gives 6 protection.

        So now I am PS:24 MD:15 (17) AG:8 (10) EN:22 MA:3 WP:13 FT: 24 PC: 8. My TMR drops to 3.
Engaged initiative value is AG+PC+Weapkn Rank or 3+8+1= 12
Shield Rush is 40% + Rank or 43% for D-2 damage
        Battle Axe strike chance is BC+MD+4xRank = 60+17+0= 77% D+4 damage
        Defense Rating = AG+(shieldRank * shield bonus) = 8 + (1x3) = 11

        Hope that helps

Hmm. Rolling 2d10 instead of 4d5, wont that change the distribution of results to a flatter result?

This was another change between the SPI white edition and the Bantam Edition (4D5 to 2D10).

There is a different distribution of points.

You can find a version of the Bantam Edition in our Files >> Archive area.

Is there a summary of all the changes somewhere? There seem to be a few in that Bantam edition.

I don't know of any. As far as I am aware most of the changes were in Book One Character Generation, Combat.

I did begin a comparison of my SPI edition with a previous online version where there had been many house rules added but so of ran out of steam after the first book.

I just recently got an actual version of the Bantam Edition but I have not yet done a paragraph by paragraph comparison (as it is time consuming and tedious).

Here's a question for the community.

What requirements, beyond minimum MA, do you put on characters wishing to become an Adept of a College?

How much time and experience do you require them to put into learning their college at the minimum level?

Experience can be basically calculated as the sum of all the general knowledge spells and rituals being learned to rank 0. How about time, beyond that required to learn the GK?

Do you require them to spend extra time as apprentices for years before being given all their minimum training?

I read somewhere, I think in one of the files either here or the other DQ group, where it talks of a six month period to change colleges. I would guess that would be a proper amount of tme to become a mage. Unless you want to penalize the caracter for starting out as a non-mage, then perhaps a year should do it. So, there is the time out of the campaign, which may not be critical depending on the amount of down-time normally available, then there is the costs associated with the training - living expenses, paying the teacher, books, equipment, strange materials, and who can guess what else. After all, the character is a successful adventurer, not some snot-nosed brat who has to be taugt how to tie his or her shoes.

Since I'm all new to the game I wont talk from DQ experience, but I'd say you should never punish players for taking a specific path or profession. Make it just as hard to achieve as any other change or heart, like suddenly becoming a warrior.

I think there was an article in Dragon Magazine, archived in the files are, about making the Warrior a bit more interesting by quantifyign magical training in EP and time. Using that as a baseline might work.
