Anybody know anything else about this? Anybody wanna start sending

In the issue of Ares that I'd mentioned in my previous post (Nr. 7),
they describe a possible boardgame based on the works of H.P.
Lovecraft called, you guess it, The Necronomicon.

Now how cool would that have been?

There are a couple of websites that had a few new monsters, and then
there is my own database of creature data (containing all the

If there is a compendium of new creatures, I sure would like to know
where/how to get a copy.

I have been working on a monster manual for the past few years (haven't
worked on it in about 6 months now) that included all the monsters in the
DQ book as well as all the monsters in 1st edition AD&D and some of the
monsters in later editions. (Pretty much any monster I didn't think was
lame or stupid). While not in 100% DQ format, they would be close to 100%
usable by DQ players. If anyone wants to take a look at a sample chapter,
I would be more than happy to send one out and see what you think of it and
perhaps get your opinions on how compatible you feel it is with DQ. I
would say the Monster manual is around 90% done at this point, with only a
few chapters left. Humanoids are only partially done and Fairies and
Demons/devils still need to be done. I could post a chapter here if there
is interest. I would actually like some feedback.

As one who had a successful submission that garnered me a $10 Coupon off SPI merchandise (and they went belly up before I could use it) I can somewhat describe the MonsterQuest goal.  Each submission was to have a creature based on literature - including current day science fiction/fantasy - where a complete entry for the monster was written up and the source book name/author provided so that it could be confirmed and checked out.

I am sure that most campaigns have home made creatures made up - I know I did.  Plus I converted both Harn and Empire of the Petal throne (and their bestiaries) into DragonQuest. When you have a good campaign going it's amazing the amount of effort you're willing to put into it.  Unfortunately that group broke up in 1986 and I haven't really played much since.

I kinda had an idea that's what they were asking for, not just home
made monsters. I'm thinking entries could be uploaded to the database
or files sections here and then we can argue ceaselessly over the
accuracy and validity of the posts. :P

I'll post my first at the earliest opportunity (I've got my eye on
the Killmoulis) and get the ball rolling, if nobody beats me to it.

This is a test.

I've discovered this site, which might be a reasonable alternative to
this group (and its sister Yahoo groups) as well as WebRPG, which
seems to have lost 98% of the DQ activity it had before their format
change.

Take a look and see if you like it.

Hi

After GMing the new LOTR rpg I have finally found someone else to GM that.
This means I can now concentrate on writing a new DQ campaign. I have dug
out the parties character sheets from my DragonNewt campaign which they
finsihed years ago. Some of them have the skill 'weapon-mastery' on their
character sheets. I have no clue what this is (I assume it is some kind of
optional thing I have since 'lost'). Anybody else have a record of what
this is??

I figured that it was a sign that I should re-up here with the folks on

Hi John & everyone,

In July 1999 there were quite a few discussions on WebRPG. I compiled
everyone's answers on some subjects in FAQs that I put on my web site.
Since opinions as to how to handle such and such situation differed, I
put together "schools of thoughts", this way it helps people make their
own mind without enforcing a rule down their throats!

You can see these FAQs on my web site in the "DragonQuest FAQs" link, it
is also part of the DQOS (DragonQuest Open Source) project that you can
also look at on the site at http://www.iosphere.net/~eric/dq/ . In fact
the big thing about the DQOS project was to do something similar to what
John wants to do now as far as I can see. Also John Rauchert (DQPA
president) was onto starting "core rules" for DQ, that would be a very
interesting project too. But, those projects require a lot of time (I
gave up after about 100 hours of work). I had combed the web back then
for many nights for all DQ materiel and noted credits (this is a must)
at the same time and started building the DQOS... So, the problem with
such projects is not a lack of will, passion or interest... It is a lack
of time.

One big project that got accomplished is the "The Fourth Book: Arcane
Wisdom" which was done by Craig Brain and his team (all credits on
second page of the document) who provided a revised and complete edition
of this Book. If you haven't seen it, it is a must to look at, the guys
did superb work with this, download on same site.

It is a sad thing that the WebRPG discussions were just gone one day...
Anybody did a backup of it?

By the way, I'll take the opportunity to ask every member of the
DragonQuest Players Association to verify their e-mail addresses and
forward me the changes, I recently sent a mailout to all 221 members and
quite a few were not valid anymore. The DQPA is at

Hi John,

I believe that Web Ring (the coordinating service

think whoever it was who had set up the DQ WebRing
didn't follow it through that period, and it has gone
away.

I haven't followed that all that closely myself,
though, so I'm not certain.

Snafaru is webmastering the DQPA pages, and I think
he's keeping the links pretty up-to-date. Contact him
about putting in new links.

I am also the DragonQuest area moderator for the DMOZ

the listings there, as well.

And welcome back! I'd realized you had dropped out of

happened.

I am also planning to become an editor of the DragonQuest entry on Wikipedia
 http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/DragonQuest

I wonder if it would be a good idea for us to combine our resources into a tighter package (Webring/Directory/Encyclopedia) so that changes and updates can be shared together rather than made separately?

For instance we could make the DMOZ directory the official one and have a couple of editors maintain it.

How big is the file, and would you be willing to send
me a copy of it?

I've been doing a little work on a webpage to archive
the discussion from dqn-list, but if the old WebRPG
files are transportable, I think it would be a higher
priority to get those configured and made available
for reference once again.

One of the things I like about the new QuickTopic site
(which some of the rest of you have visited as well)
is that the discussion can be exported and saved in a
database-friendly format. (I haven't tried it out
yet, but I think it should be fairly easy to use.)
I'm planning on archiving those discussions and having
them available on the Web as well.

Nice to see that someone else has resurrected their DRAGONQUEST
rpg campaign after a hiatus. I've come back to the game system once
more, after a 2-year long absence. Should never have left the game to
go to another couple of fantasy systems (since one of them didn't work
at all) for that time.

Aww, that's a damn shame, since the DQ Information Network webring
was a really useful site and source of DQ web pages. :( I take it no
one has resurrected it in any shape or form?

It was a really odd situation, Rodger, to be honest, and I'm
actually quite glad I'm back in the DQ fold after a couple of years and
all that. The game is such a good game, and to be honest, I'd
forgotten just how good it was after this time (especially when
compared to the two fantasy rpgs that I thought I'd try out during that
hiatus).

So, what's going on with the DQN? Are we likely to see any new
issues of it?

Hi Greg,

I have good news for you, there is a DragonQuest game for the computer!

Well, to be more precise, I used the original engine for the Wizardry
CRPG to make a scenario with all DragonQuest stuff in it, be it
characters, weapons, armor, monsters, etc. with their stats reflecting
what's in the 2nd edition of DQ, so this is as close as it gets.

It is at http://www.iosphere.net/~eric/dq/ , click the "DragonQuest - a
Wizardry scenario by Snafaru" picture.

For those of you who have never played Wizardry, there is a user's
manual included with installation instructions and gameplay. Also, you

Subject: DQ Poll and Blackout
Hullo, folks,

Just a reminder that I have got the new-and-improved JohnK DQ Fan
Poll up and running at the website. However, since I made the
announcement last week right before the blackout, just wanted to let
folks know that you can check out the webpages and take part in the fan
poll, now that my internet provider is back on-line. The URL is

http://www.comnet.ca/~jkahane/dq/dragonquest.html

Please vote at the website...oh, and send your friends, enemies, and
your players! ;)

Hullo, JohnD,

While I know this message is relatively old, I thought that it
would be interesting to reply to it, and perhaps start this
discussion over again. :)

I don't know whether I honestly agree with either of these
points. Not every character becomes an Adept simply because some
players prefer not to play Mages, and the Experience Cost to become a
Mage is rather high, not to mention one has to learn the spells
individually, thus spending the points one has on magic spells and
rituals rather than on increasing one's Rank in specific other skills
and weaponry.

As for the invested items, I think this is something that is
dependent on the how the GM and players in a campaign view the nature
of magic. While the D&D "Monty Haul" approach can be used here, that
is not necessarily the approach that most of the folks take to magic
items here. Besides, invested items are not permanent in nature,
unless one has Shaping Magics being a common flavour of magic among
the NPCs (since not a lot of players are going to take the College).
And investing an item takes time... Since the ritual is primarily
based on Magic Aptitude, most Mages will only have a BC of around
20-23% (based on MA) to cast the investment ritual (+3 per hour
spent), plus my (Rank x 3)% plus an additional 5-8% (MA-15) on top of
that. So, with Rank 6 in the ritual, I can spend four hours casting
the ritual, and that gives me an extra +12% to my chance of doing the
ritual, giving me a final total of BC=[(20/23) + 12 + (5/8) + 18]%
for a cast chance of between 55% and 61% on average, and that's not
including any other modifiers. That's not a "great" chance of
investing the item, and it only give me 6 charges of the spell that
I've put into the item. Frankly, I don't think this leads to a lot
of invested items in a campaign, unless a) the GM is allowing this
sort of thing to happen regularly, and b) characters are taking high
Ranks with the ritual.

Oh, and for the record, DQ 2nd Ed., Section 32.3 states that "The
Investment Ritual is a Special Knowledge Ritual", so it is *not*
General Knowledge. But I suppose this depends on one's house rules
and which version of DQ one is using.

I would say that a "high magic" world is one in which there are
lots of magic items that are truly powerful, not just minor
investments, and where magic is common and everyday. A world where
water jugs fill automatically or a jug where the cream always stays
fresh, and where magical servants constantly clean up the place would
be "high magic".

> Number of magic items?

Yes, to some extent. See above.

> Number of spell users?

Yes. If magic is common and people who can wield it are common,
then the world is "high fantasy".

> Number of fantastical beats and mythical sites?

I think so in terms of the magical sites, but it's possible that
a world is "high magic" now, but was "low magic" before until
something changed. Usually, of course, in fantasy literature this
works in reverse, where a "high magic" world becomes "low magic"
oriented because of what has happened.

This is, to me, one of the strengths of DRAGONQUEST, that one can
actually see some of the origins of the various Colleges of Magic in
literary and mythological sources, and it's what makes the Colleges
so realistic in many ways. One of the Colleges that I worked on for
some time (although I found someone else's variant of that College,
and revised my own to work in some of its elements) was that of
Mirror Magics. Magical mirrors are so common in mythology and
fantasy literature, and it was a variant that I really wanted to do
something with, so I did. I've only had a couple of Mirror Mages
over the years, but they brought a whole new dimension to the game;
heck, some of the stuff you can do with mirrors is kind of neat. :)

For the record, I have worked for about 14 years on a Priest Skill
that was modeled on the one that was going to appear in the Religion
book and supplement that had been planned for DQ. I had seen way
back when the manuscript on Priest Skill and the Miracle system that
was going to be used, and I have laboured for a long time re-creating
from memory what I remembered about the piece. My version of the
Priest Skill is complete, and will go onto my website sometime in the
near future, as soon as I take care of a few other things.

Subject: The Priest Thing
Hullo, folks,

One thing I forgot to mention in the
previous post is that the secondary
Characteristic Devoutness (DV) (which some
will remember from an article I wrote that
was published in DQN way back) originated in
the Priest skill material that I had seen, as
did the Knowledge Rank (KR) which all Priests
have, both good ones and bad ones. It is
used to determine certain elements of the
Priest's abilities as it pertains to their
religion and beliefs (for example, to
simulate the amount of damage done by "holy"
or "unholy" water blessed (or cursed) by the
Priest on a target such as a servant of Light
or an Undead of some type).

I suspect that there will be a lot about
this version of Priest skill that folks will
either really like or really dislike. :)

but something "real" DQ is like gold dust

Indeed it is. I managed to find another
copy of the 2nd Edition boxed set through
Noble Knight Games, and paid a humble $50.00
US for it about four years ago. I considered
it a steal at that price.

For the record, I ran a campaign with DQ
v1 when it first came out that lasted about a
year. The characters started the 2nd Edition
campaign converting the characters, but this
didn't last long. I've been running 2nd
Edition since. Well, I guess what passes for
JohnK's DQ 2nd Edition, since I've added a
whole batch of stuff over the years.

Oddly enough, I've only heard of a couple
of other players I know who ran DQ using the
first edition. It was kind of neat, since I
got to play for about ten weeks in a DQ1
game. :)

I guess I'm one of the few who actually liked First Edition DQ enough to play it extensively.
At the time DQ was released, my gaming buddy was designing his own FRP using Action Points and an extremely detailed combat system which our group loved -- hey, when you're young, you have TIME to play extremely detailed combat systems!  :-)   Then along came DQ and we all switched over; the work was already done and our designer friend maintained that he liked the way DQ used Action Points better than the method he was working on. We played the First Edition with APs for a couple of years, even resisting changing over to Second Edition when it came out.
But when I revived the game a few years back, I was about the only person in our group who still liked the APs, so I've let them slide have been playing 2nd Edition ever since.

My wife and I saw one shrink-wrapped at a con in Virginia about 8 tears ago for $10.00. I went back to get it and
